Hello everyone!! So, today, I have the absolute honour of reviewing Children of Blood and Bone* by Tomi Adeyemi!!! Why is this an honour?, you say. BECAUSE IT’S AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!! IT’S AMAZING OHMYGOSH I LOVE IT SO MUCH And when I wrote this review immediately after finishing it last week, I remember thinking/saying exactly: “it’s freaking amazing. what the even was that ending.” and I still think that now!!! IT’S JUST SO GOOD OMG so yeah, it is an honour to review this book and thank you soooooooooo much to The Book Bratz for gifting me the ARC y’all are so sweet and I really appreciate it!!!! Before I get into the review (which is NOT spoilery, don’t worry), here’s the synopsis, via Goodreads:
Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir.
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.
Doesn’t it sound WOW?!?! Ahhhh it really is!!!! Here’s my review of it….
Setting (A+): the setting is awesomeeeee. like the vibrancy and the amazingness and ohmygosh it makes so much sense for there to be a movie because IT READS EXACTLY LIKE A MOVIE you can see it all in your head as things happen and the setting just plays off of the plot and gosh I loved it.

Plot (A+): THE PLOT. There’s nothing like it. I mean, sure it sounds familiar but like no. This book is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s a combination of so many of my favorite things plus so many new things and the amount of wow you get from the plot is just….wow. And it’s crazy because it’s 600 pages and you would think, at some point, it would be boring or there would be some unnecessary parts BUT ALL OF IT IS NECESSARY and it’s never boring!!!!! It’s fast and it makes sense and everything plays off each other and things lead into each other and there is just no way for it to pause and break in half to two books. It’s just wow.
Characters (A+): the characters are freaking fantastic like ohmygosh. There are three POVs and you get such a ride from being in their minds because there’s similar things and different things just like how any normal situation would be that’s experienced by the same people in different ways and you see the progression of ideas and experiences from new eyes and I know it sounds like I’m saying the same thing over and over again but wow. Seriously, it’s insane. And outside of just the main characters, everyone else is also whoa. Like the people you meet are all so interesting in different ways and they’re all necessary to drive the plot forward and it just made the book feel so much better because, sure, you could maybe take a couple characters out but then the book wouldn’t be as good as it is and as full as it is (if that makes sense). But wow.
Overall, I’m still breathing (ya I said that. I mean it) from reading this book. I can’t stop thinking about it and I’m probably going to reread it again because I definitely, probably missed things and ohgoodnessgraciouswasthisbookamazing. I can’t wait for you guys to read this and I can’t wait for the movie. Please please pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee preorder this book*, order it for your library, sneak into the Henry Holt offices and take a copy of the book…ANYTHING! Just find some way to read Children of Blood and Bone*!!!! I promise, you will be all the better for it!
