Hey everyone! So, last year, I picked up The Bone Witch* by Rin Chupeco; it seemed interesting and said it would have dragon-like things so I was immediately sold! Once I read it, I pretty sure I died and went to heaven because it was BRILLIANT! I absolutely loved it so, of course, I couldn’t wait to read The Heart Forger*, the second book, and OMG THIS BOOK I CAN’T!!!! Before I get into everything/my (kind of spoilery) review, though, here’s the synopsis, via Goodreads:
In The Bone Witch, Tea mastered resurrection―now she’s after revenge…
No one knows death like Tea. A bone witch who can resurrect the dead, she has the power to take life…and return it. And she is done with her self-imposed exile. Her heart is set on vengeance, and she now possesses all she needs to command the mighty daeva. With the help of these terrifying beasts, she can finally enact revenge against the royals who wronged her―and took the life of her one true love.
But there are those who plot against her, those who would use Tea’s dark power for their own nefarious ends. Because you can’t kill someone who can never die…
War is brewing among the kingdoms, and when dark magic is at play, no one is safe.
Sounds good, yeah? IT’S BETTER THAN GOOD IT’S AMAZING OMG ok let’s go!!!!
Plot (A+): WHAT THE EVEN THIS PLOT!!!!!! TBH I kinda forgot the details of what happened plot-wise in The Bone Witch (altho I did remember the end of it funnily enough) so I kinda walked into reading The Heart Forger not fully knowing what would happen and IDK if that mattered but I had legit no idea of what would happen AT ALL in the book like even to the end I was still wide-eyed and OMG and it made the experience SOOOOO much better!!!! Like I said, the entire time I was reading THF, I was sitting on the edge of my seat and totally in heaven!!! It’s probably the first time in a LONG time that I had no idea what would happen and in the end, I was totally wrong about any theory I had LOL
Also, I absolutely loved the plot?!?! Like other than the fact that I had no idea what would happen, I felt like I was watching a movie! The daeva are awesome and the connection with the azi??! I want my own azi lol Plus, the whole things with the Bard and explanations (what a great way to explain things!) and Emperor Shifang before and now and like I just can’t. It is all sooooooo good I have no words to describe just how much I love this book *sighs happily*
Characters (A+): Ok as much as I loved learning about the various characters and starting relationships last book, I felt that Heart Forger was soooo much better at showing the chemistry between characters. One of the interesting pieces was watching just how regular Tea and Kance’s relationship was versus a more fiery and loving relationship between Tea and Kalen! Something to note though was that it didn’t feel totally realistic of a shift between Tea/Kance and Tea/Kalen. Or rather it took me a second to get used to the past Tea/Kalen relationship, but I think it was helped by the current Tea/Kalen relationship and seeing how in love and powerful they were together.
Something else that was fun to see was the deeper look we get into the bond (both via mind and not) between Tea and Fox…and the azi & savul. It might be because I don’t fully remember the specifics of what their bond was in The Bone Witch but I was really happy with how we got to see what it was like for Fox and Tea to have a bond, and how the azi vs the savul affected them & the bond, and also how Inessa factored into Fox’s part of the bond. I realllly enjoyed it all and can’t wait to see more of the bond and relationships in the next book.
Lastly, I wanted to take a second and highlight Khalad, the Heartforger’s apprentice, because I was quite neutral about him in reading The Bone Witch but, in this book, I found I wanted to know more about him and was really happy when he came up! This time around, it felt like we got to see more of who Khalad is as a Heartforger and as a person which was wonderfulllll
Anyways, all in all, I really loved The Heart Forger! It was written incredibly well and I found the plot to be absolutely brilliant!!! Now, have you guys read The Bone Witch* and/or The Heart Forger? If so, what did you think? If not, what are you waiting for lol?! Let me know in the comments below!
